Adopted by the Taoist priests, the Lo River Writing has become an interesting symbol and ritual instrument. It represents the floor plan within the sacred area (t’an) of the temple where Taoist liturgy is being performed, as, for example, during the Cosmic Renewal Festival:

The chief cantor takes the solemn memorial, during orthodox ritual, and dances the steps of Yü after the model of the Lo-shu. He travels from 1 to 9 in the magic square, that is, from earth to heaven, presenting the memorial to the heavenly emperors. Then, reversing the dance steps, he returns to earth, bearing the rescript that brings blessings to the visible world of men. With the greatest reverence, the Taoist Master receives back the rescript and dances a triumphant Yü-pu (steps of Yü) modeled after the Ho-t’u. (Saso, 1978: 412–3)
